At SM&, we think of social media as a tree -- and we think
our clients should, too. Above the ground you see the many branches
of traditional outlets -- newspapers, TV shows, radio programs,
magazines. Below the ground lies a vast network of equal importance
that feeds the traditional outlets and allows stories to grow. This
root system is social media.
We strongly advise the cultivation and use of social media with
all of our clients, both for internal and external communications
efforts. We'll work carefully with you to determine which tools
best fit your strategic goals, and how you can properly manage both
the content and the commitment required. Our gamut of
recommendations includes blogs, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn,
geolocation services (e.g. FourSquare and SCVNGR), and a number of
other emerging tools. We will leverage these services on your
behalf and/or recommend how you can use them better internally.
General media space today is at a premium, and achieving
substantive, on-message coverage is a challenge. At the same time,
powerful blogs and other outlets have emerged to capture the
attention and opinions of specific audiences in almost every niche.
These virtual resources have amazing potential to reach exactly the
kind of people you're seeking, and then give them the opportunity
and compelling reasons to pass your message on to their own
networks. As a firm policy, we include social media outlets and
targeted Twitter users (called tweeps) on every media list across
accounts. We have carefully developed tools that enable us to
identify exactly what will work for you, depending on the services
you require and the goals you set.
