HELENE SOLOMON COMMENTS ON TJX DATA-THEFT CRISIS IN THE BOSTON HERALD
January 2007
In the Boston Herald' s Monday, January 22, business section, Solomon McCown President and CEO Helene Solomon commented on the previous week's data-theft crisis at TJX Companies, Inc. This parent company of T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods stores announced on Wednesday, January 17, that a security breach of its computer systems may have compromised millions of customers who had made purchases using credit and debit cards.
Analyzing TJX's crisis communications response, Solomon observed that customers need to have information disclosed to them as quickly and accurately as possible for them to retain confidence in a brand. "I think there's an obligation to balance consumer privacy" with business goals, she said.
Still, Solomon suggested, this crisis could also provide a chance for TJX to earn goodwill if it takes the initiative in becoming a leader in data security reforms.
"People do like to give second chances," she said.
