SM& EVP ASHLEY MCCOWN CONTRIBUTES TO NEWHOUSE NEWS SERVICE FEATURE ON THE DEADLY PET FOOD CRISIS
April 2007
Since February 20, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration first learned that pets were dying from eating tainted pet food, the manufacturer, Menu Foods, has struggled with waves of negative press as reports of more animal deaths have appeared each week.
In a Newhouse News Service feature called "Pet Food Firm Couldn't Manage Crisis," crisis communications experts criticize Menu Foods' ineffective and bunker-like response. Solomon McCown Executive Vice President Ashley McCown is used as a resource for tips on how to handle a crisis, such as opening up immediate lines of communication, developing a plan and "playing offense" by proactively offering fixes for mistakes.
The Newhouse News Service serves and posts articles from 26 newspapers around the country, such as The Ann Arbor News, The Oregonian (Portland, Ore.), The Plain Dealer (Cleveland), The Republican (Springfield, Mass.), The Times-Picayune (New Orleans) and The Star-Ledger (Newark, N.J.), where the article first appeared.
